It’s hard to figure out what Charles Barkley was doing on SNL – Saturday Night Live. He had hosted before–like a million years ago, when NBA players still wore small-shorts–and he was certainly game, but not especially amusing, which you’d reckon would be part of the job description (though maybe not with watching January Jones on the program some weeks ago). Plus the show ongoing a half-hour late on the east coast because of the football playoffs. At least Alicia Keys was on SNL as the musical guest–and an unexpected laugh getter.

You can say this about Barkley’s comedic skills: he was a very excellent basketball player back in the day. On that note, we certainly like the thought of giving the stars of the past a shot–pop culture certainly goes further back than, say, Ke$ha–but aren’t there any current sports icons that were available? I mean, other than Tiger Woods?
Barkley’s monologue was mostly flat cue-card reading, though Speakeasy appreciated it when he keen out how few African-American hosts the show has had lately.
One of Barkley’s best skits of the night was a segment in which he was the companion on a ski lodge visit of a crazy Marilyn Monroe wannabe–Kristen Wiig’s “Shana” character–whose sexual comeons all came with a twisted twist. It was a small long, but raised a few smiles. He was also pretty excellent playing himself in a sequence about an NBA announcer who is paired with a guest announcer who is underage, underprepared and suffering from a terminal illness. And the “MacGruber” bits with Barkley had some laughs in them too.
But perhaps the best skit of the night belonged not to Charles Barkley but to the musical gues, Alicia Keys. Speakeasy has always despised the phrase so-and-so “can do no incorrect,” but Alicia Keys sure is doing a whole lot aptly lately.
